Frequently Asked Questions (and Answers) About Andrea Mulder-Slater
Have you had formal art training?
► Yes. I studied full time for three years at the College and Georgian College School of Design and Visual Arts. During my time at the SDVA, I studied under well known Canadian artists including Marlene Hilton-Moore, Tim Zuck, John Hartman, Sandra Meigs, Ted Fullerton, Alek Sorotschynski, Part Hart and Roger Kerslake. After I received my three year diploma, I continued on for another year with pottery courses. In addition, I am slowly working towards my BFA.
Do you ever teach others how to paint?
► Yes. I have been teaching art since 1992. I have taught all ages from age 3 through to age 93.
Why did you start painting with coffee?
► I have been painting with coffee for more than 10 years. I began painting with coffee after I had spent years accidentally dipping my paintbrush into my coffee mug instead of my paint water. One fine day I decided to try painting with coffee, instead of paint.
How do you know your abstract paintings are finished?
► I just do. When I complete an abstract, I feel completely and totally exhausted. I become so immersed in the work that often, hours pass by as I work, without me even realizing it. Sometimes complete a piece in one sitting, from start to finish, regardless of how long it takes - sometimes I go back to make adjustments over a period of days.
When did you know you wanted to be an artist?
► I have always been involved in creative pursuits, including music (playing piano) and writing. However, it wasn't until my 20s that I knew I wanted to make art a career.
What inspires you?
► The ocean. And coffee :)
Who is your favorite artist from the past?
► Henri Matisse.
